LE BANC

Manifesto

Boredom is a feature

Let's be blunt: most of the time nothing happens on the bench. You open the app, there are two people, and nobody has spoken for twenty minutes.

For a long time we treated that as the problem to solve. We listed the classic remedies: conversation starters, a question of the day, a badge for whoever speaks first, a notification when someone sits down.

Then we looked at what we were doing

Every one of those ideas turns a calm situation into an obligation. A question of the day is a host. A badge is a score. A notification is a summons.

A bench where nothing happens is a bench that works. That's what a bench is.

The app says as much when you're on your own: "You're alone on the bench for now. Someone will sit down eventually." No apology, no suggestion, no entertainment. A statement of fact.

What makes good conversations possible is precisely that they aren't compulsory.
